Canada celebrates Thanksgiving this year on Oct 9th. I am often asked by my American friends why we copied the US and what does it stand for in Canada. Little do they realize that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in Canada.
Canada had the first Thanksgiving, in 1578, by English explorer Martin Frobisher and his crew in what is now Newfoundland. They held a special meal to thank God for granting them safe passage through northern North America into the New World. The first Thanksgiving in the United States, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1621.
It is important to note that both Canadian and American Thanksgiving have evolved over time, and there are many different perspectives on their origins. However, it is generally accepted that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in Canada.
